I am always surprised when people still suffer with shin splints and don't seem to know either the cause nor the cure.

Shin splints are caused by muscle imbalance. The front muscles are weak and the calves are strong.

The way to correct Shin splints is to strengthen the muscles at the front of the legs. Lie face down in bed with your toes hanging over the edge. Pull your toes upward against the resistance of the mattress. Try to work up to 3 or 4 sets of 5 – 10 reps each.

There are other variations of this, such as hanging a paint can on your toes, or using the angle iron on bleachers to slip your toes under.

Good Luck

You really need to read "Stop Shin Splints" by Gary Buchenic (also available in electronic format here: http://www.shinsplintscure.org ). It's about how to permanently cure your shin splints naturally. Worked for me and for thousands of people. Good luck!

Shin spints are cause by muscles in front of your leg pulling away from the shin bone.

1. When you feel the condition developing, massage those muscles toward the bone. These are big motions from the side of the leg back toward the shin.
2. Ibuprophen
3. Ice
4. You have to back off while you recover. If you don't, this will dog you all season.

You can stretch the muscles. Massage works well. Ice. Use heat. Take Ibuprofen for the inflamation and pain. Flexeril will help the spasms. Let it heal. Also stretching the muscles and tissue on the front of the legs will help also. It could take 2-3 weeks for it to heal.

Make sure you have proper running shoes.
Do stretches(especially before running)
Going from feet flat on ground to the balls of your feet a few times repeatedly helps.
