I am keeping a friend's approx 1 yr old toy poodle until she gets spayed - approx 3 week stay. She has been confused on potty training. I thought I could maybe help cement her training while she's here and here is what I am doing. Have her wear a doggie diaper in the house. She seems to need to go every hour, so every hour I also put all the dogs outside and say go potty. She seems to know what this means but will also go in the house if you do not get her out. Does this mean she is potty trained? How does one get them to let you know when they need to go? My two dogs are potty trained but we never taught them to ask. We just put them out often and when they start barking and wanting to go out -often they just want to go out to bark, so we can't tell when or if they need to go.

You must be vigilant. Watch the puppy for any signs that she needs to go which include sniffing, circling, and, of course, the grouched posture. If you catch her in the posture say No!, scoop her up and take her outside. DO NOT PUNISH! (The 2 days outside thing is ridiculous, it will not teach her anything. The only reason it may work is that the puppy establishes a waste area on its own. Dogs have managed to live with us in spite of these training methods but not because of them.)

Get her on a schedule. She will need to go about 20 to 30 min. after she drinks.

Stay with her when she is outside and reward her directly after she goes potty. This will reinforce where the potty area is. On that note, remember to clean any accidents promptly and with special odor eliminators. Dog find the "restroom" by scent not by sight.

Keep her confined when you cannot watch her close. A crate is the best way, but baby gates work for kitchens with noncarpeted floors. This will limit your clean-up area and time.

I've had several dogs, some just catch on and don't need to be "potty trained". Ones that do, well there's the easy way, as soon as the dog does it in the house, it goes outside for two days. This must happen imediatly, with comments like "bad dog". Do not relent and let it back in the house for two days, even feeding outside. Yes it will whine. But I've never had to do this more than twice to a dog (then only one dog) and they learn really quickly that peeing or pooping in the house is not allowed.
Rubbing a dog's nose in it does not work and just results in having a smelly confused dog.

Try being very strict along with her time table. With puppies, there is a lovely direct dating among devour and poop! So feed her whilst daily, then stroll her part an hour after that till she poops. Feed her simplest a couple of times in keeping with day. Treats rely, so restrict them or, once more, be certain you feed them to her whilst daily. If that does not paintings, you can ought to return to crate coaching. Hang in there. I as soon as had a puppy that loved to poop as we have been strolling to the door to move out! Even she received it finally.

Well all dogs eventually will let you know they need to go. Most of the time it is easier if their are other dogs. Maybe she needs to go every 45 min. and also i would limit her intake of water. to say once every 2 hrs. I dont think shes quite got it!
