If you have all of your information together and organized, you can mail in a return on January 1. The first date to efile is a couple weeks later.

You can file anytime after January 1 as long as you have your information ready. Just be prepared to amend the tax return if any 1099's that you receive don't match what you are claiming as revenue.

As soon as you are ready after January 1st. Jan. 1 is when the new forms are available. If you are a student or have a student (in college or grad school) you should also remember the FAFSA can be done on Jan. 1 as well.

If you're self employed, and if you don't plan on working anymore the rest of this year, I think you can file now... but Jan 1 is the official date for everyone who is not self employed...
