ok I have a 7 week puppy who was neglected I took him in and got him to the vet. He has mange and it is the one that is contagious to humans. Also because of the mange he scratches and has sores all over him. He crys but I understand that he hurts. I have him in this room, and how our apartment is set up is there is a big open window inthe wall it is between the study room and living room so I can see him and hear him and so can he. Anyway I feel that even though Im giving him medicine I need to love on him but he is full of sores and contagious Im scared to pet him till this clears up. I have a big comforter that I fluff up and lay him in and I gave him a stuffed bear that he loves he always has it by him its adorable but I wish I could do more is there anything else I culd do to make him feel loved because he will fry but I don't want to pick him up yet? I will when all the mange is gone because I love dogs and he will be a indoor pet. I pick him up with a towel and cradle him.

Use rubber gloves when you touch him so you don't infect the sores or catch it yourself. Have you tried some kind of spray like Solarcaine to numb the skin a little? He will need you to touch him because the first 8 weeks are vital to how they will respond to people later, you don't want him becoming feral. He may be crying because of fear more than pain, consider his neglect and now not being able to really bond with you. If you can just lay him next to you so at least you are near and he can cuddle up if he chooses.

Maybe you should try going to the store and buying some rubber gloves to wear while you pet him and touch him. You can find some at the local grocery store in the aisle where they sell the cleaning suppiles. I have some latex gloves I bought from the grocery store that are like surgery gloves, latex and thin enough that you can feel pretty well through them. This would allow you to touch the dog and still keep your hands from touching the mange. Also try asking your vet a good way to make contact with the pup. He is seven weeks old so he's still young. You still have time to bond with him after this health ordeal is over. As for it being abuse, I would consider it more of a cautionary procedure since you don't want to contract the disease yourself and possibly pass it back to the little guy. It always pays to be cautious. Buy the gloves and talk to the vet. I'm sure he'll come up with some ideas as well.

Hold him and hand feed him. Get a pair of gloves and handle the dog you can always toss them into the wash. Besides needing to heal this dog is also developing and learning, so be sure to continue to expose him to new things. Get toys and play with him. Invite people over to see him (he doesn't know he's gross looking) so he gets used to people. Make sure everyone hands him a good treat.

I'm sorry to say but thats a form of neglect. You have to show some contact, maybe wrap him in a soft blanket while you hold him, put him closer to you when you are working, not just across the room, and talk to him more if you dont wanna touch him.

I'd suggest buying him a doggy shirt or sweater. that way you could pet him with out touching the mangy bits. And it might help it heal quicker as it would be harder for the puppy to scrach at it.
