convienance stores cannot add without the cash register? i mean i just want a 99cent cup of coffee and a soda thats 99cents. if the register acts up why can't they give me change for a five and add the tax in their head?

Not all cash register people are that smart. They might be able to give you change, but most probably don't know how to add the tax in their heads because it is too hard for them

Probably cause most people that work at those stores never finished their education or they would have better jobs. Cut them a break though at least they are working and attempting to make a living.

Many people employed to run a cash register are not that good with mental arithmetic, thanks to the discarding of fact drills in school. Most checkout clerks rely completely on the register to do their math for them.

The register is their brain. Well, for me anyways, I'm just personally not good in the Math Department.

sadly, they forget how to use math. It is possible to graduate without mastering this skill. One woman wouldn't let me buy a lighter because my ID didn't have a bar code for that state! It's really quite sad and instead of being frusturated, ask them if they need tutoring!
