It has been a long time since I bought a gun in PA so I'm sure what I remember is out of date. The place to start is by asking some of your friends who are hunters. The next best step is to contact the state NRA hunting training office (the people that provide the hunting safety courses). I don't believe the national NRA site goes into that sort of detail but you can always try there. One sure way to find out what you need is to call a gun shop, Wal-Mart, or whoever sells guns as they know better then anybody and will probably know if you live in a communist area that requires a permit just for thinking about it (or something like that :) ).
EDIT: there is NO WAITING time. That was a temporary measure until the instant check system was functioning. They will do a check while you wait at the store. This is a national law.

Federal Law mandates you must be 18 years of age to purchase shotguns and rifles...21 years of age for handguns and handgun ammunition.
You can walk into any firearms store or Distributor in Pennsylvania, show a State issued Drivers license or Age of Majority ID as identification , fill out the proper paperwork..let the Dealer call in a NICS check (Criminal Background check done on the spot) pay and walk out the door with your NEW shotgun.....
*The Dealer is responsible for registering the firearm, not you. It's all a part of the purchasing process......

NO permit required for Shotgun, just buy it, have a instant background check done, show I. D.* , minor paper work, pay for it and walk out the door. Total time involved is about 30 minutes.* Pa. resident.*

You may but rifles and shotguns from an FFL dealer. Wheter you have to register them, or need some sort of local or state permit, check with your local authoritites. In most areas you don't need it to buy. This is true also for handguns in most states, but you have to be 21 to buy handguns.

The legal purchase of a gun is highly regulated. I'm not sure about your state but a back ground check is usually ran hence the waiting time. I believe you can buy one just about anywhere depending on the gun you desire. Wal-mart, Dick's Sporting Goods, etc... Why do you want one?

in australia, we have to get a permit to have a gun. im sure you would have to have some sort of permit too just to check your police record and if you have any mental disorders. all guns must also be registered, just in case something goes wrong such as it being stolen.
go to a police station and they will tell you what you have to do in order to get a gun and will also be able to tell you where you may be able to purchase one. i cant imagine you would be just able to walk in a buy one. there would be a procedure you have to follow.
