Minnie Me,

A couple of serious changes have been the federal mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines judges are supposed to use. A Supreme Court ruling came out last week saying the judges don't have to follow them, but they have been using them for the past 17 years.

Many states now have the "Three Strikes" laws. Thus, someone convicted of their third felony goes down for life, or at least 25 years depending upon the state.

A third change is states trying juveniles as adults for serious crimes such as murder.

Those are the major changes I can think of. Remember, there are several reasons people are incarcerated - some believe rehabilitation, some believe public safety, some believe for punishment. The views people give regarding sentencing generally will depend upon their views for incarceration.

Longer.

And, from indeterminant (15 to life) to determinant (15 years no more no less, ignoring all the time off bonuses) sentencing.

30 years ago = no 3 strikes, no 2 strikes, no federal mandatory guidelines. The recent Supreme Court case gave federal judges more discretion to go outside of the guidelines so that might be better for defendants, but I bet the judges continue to follow the guidelines.

Personally you question is just to big to answer. You could take the side of crime and show how it has helped them out. You could also take the side of justice and show how DNA testing has helped them out. You could go down both paths for your answer...

Path of justice, well just watch a CSI episode

Path of crime, well you could watch cops for that info. There are a few other shows on some of the public channels that show how crime function.

best of luck.
