i very strongly urge you to visit http://www.mormon.org/mormonorg/eng/. There are some great answers to that very question! Basically, the way i see it is- this life is a test. We are sent here to learn about God and Jesus, and to learn how we can be more like them. To do this, we must try to obtain certain qualities like but not limited to, unconditional love, sacrafice, service, trust and faith, humbleness and meekness. We are all given opportunities every day to over come our natural instincts and to take the high road and implement these qualities. That is why we are given trials, but also why we are given blessings. And our talents- to help ourselves and others learn these things, and become better people. basically we are all rocks lying about the river- Jesus and God are the river. Their water and their constant attention over the years eventually makes our rough edges smooth. Some of us smooth out faster- and some of us require a little more attention. But essentially, God want's us to return to Him- we just need to learn those things so that we can be like Him and dwell in heaven with Him. :)
