Not all departments have polygraphs. Even if yours does, I doubt they would take the time and resources to process 12 suspects for a $300 ipod. Each polygraph test can take over an hour, it would take two full days to process all of the suspects.
Even if the department agreed, polygraphs can not be ordered, and are not admissible in court. The person who took your ipod would probably not volunteer.

The Los Angeles Police Department and LA County Sheriff's Office have computer based polygraphs, and civilian workers who operate them. They frequently use them. For example they showed on TV where there was some question about people stealing money from a store, and they took four young workers who all volunteered, to take a test. It was given off what looked like a normal computer with a few plug ins for the stuff that connected to the person taking the test. The person giving the test looked like a 65 year old grandmother, and didn't look like a sworn officer. One employee was very sick and they told him he didn't have to take the test because the machine was not reliable when you were really sick. He took it anyway. Everyone passed the test.

Most Police Departments have lie detectors and polygraph examiners - those that don't can contract it out. Results of lie detector exams arre not absolute and cannot be used in court. They can be used to assist investigators. However, the police cannot require a person to take a lie detector exam. If any or all of the suspects refuse or decline, that's the end of it. Hope you get your stuff back - and be careful when you chose your friends.

A normal police station will NOT own a lie detector.
Lie detector tests are not admisible in court and are expencive. So most police stations will not bother buying one.

Request for an investigation of your missing items so that the suspects will undergo lie detector tests in the Police Headquarters.

Polygraphs are highly inaccurate as they only measure things that change under stress. Which means anything can effect the outcome.
