what is honestly so great about religions? the only thing that they have seemed to manage to do is hav some people kill others because of there views (which is rediculous). Honestly religion is by far the greatest cause of death in history. Why would other people being different from you, because of their beliefs, be reason to kill them and cause so much conflict?
To me religion only has the purpose of giving people answers to the unknown. And much of these answers have been proven false! So honestly why do people still feel so religious?
It dosent make sense to me...

Greatest thing about religion is that it divide truth and falsehood. As per killing, any kind of groupism results is a fight. Most killing has been done in the name of nationalism and racism.

Maybe illogical and useless religions like Islam. The ironic thing is that it's the liberals who complain about religion, and yet they are the ones who want terrorists to have rights. That is liberal logic--terrorists have rights but Christians don't. And what are conservative Christians trying to do? Get rid of the terrorists, most of whom are Muslim. It is also liberals who complain about our "interference overseas"...but if not for this so-called "interference", how would we stop the terrorists? Are they just going to go away on their own? I seriously doubt it. Also, you say that these answers to the unknown "have been proven false". By what, science? The only reason people believe in evolution over creationism, for example, is that people want to believe humans are in charge. And if one piece of evidence is found to prove something wrong, it's wrong. For example, rock samples that were already known to be 50 years old (they were taken from a volcano 50 years ago) were tested and the carbon dating system said they were something like 6 million years old. If carbon dating can be wrong, so can other parts of science. And have we found any evidence whatsoever to disprove the Flood, or Creation, or the existence of God? Nope. I know parts of my answer may sound unrelated, but it all ties into the same idea--religion. I hope my answer will be mentally stimulating to you and others on this site.

Edit: A lot of the answers you have received so far are quite true. Wars are started over things other than religion more often than not. I strongly agree with the statement that "you are quick not to think in order to jump on the anti-religion bandwagon."

Zealots kill for religion. Most people do not, or there wouldn't be anyone left on earth past 3000 years ago. Faith is sometrhing you either embrace, or not. I don't preach, but I have faith, and nothing can sway that. I have seen too many things that are either pure evil, or truly miraculous to do otherwise. I think, through life experience, old teachings come back to you. It is only the young, who need a purpose, that turn to killing. They think it proves their faith, but it only turns them away from it.

I agree with your statement. Religion has caused more war, death, mayhem, misery, torture, tyrannical insurgency, more intimidation through superstition and paranoia than anything else in human history.
The constant hammering of doctrines into the mind, starting at childhood is optimum, is the reason people still believe.
Repetition, repetition, repetition.

There have also been instances where religious leaders have worked hard at making peace. Such as what could have disastrous in South Africa at the end of Apartheid, but religious people found it in their hearts to forgive and extend the hand of friendship.

Ultimately though, you can not understand spiritual things without Christ in you heart.

Please, don't be so innoncent. Nations fight over money, power, land, resources, control, etc. Religion is just a lame excuse they use to justify their actions. Since you are a non-believer, you are quick not to think in order to jump on the anti-religion band wagon. Did WWI, WWII, Korean War, or Vietnamese War start over religion.

You're just using the war with Iraq to condemn religious people. It obvious that all the real players are RICH.

People have killed each other for a myriad of reaons, including stupid things like parking spaces and cutting a person off while driving. Why do you only point out religion? Atheist gvts have killed far more people in the history of this world than religious ones. Why dont you go after atheists?

You are correct. Many people feel they need religion because they can't believe the concept of dying and not having an afterlife, so religion gives them something to supposedly look forward to. They want to believe that their way is the only "correct' way, so they feel that anyone who opposes them is wrong.

People will always be drawn to being in a group where they can feel they are right and everyone else is wrong.
