My cat, about 3 or 4 years old, is like a siamese-mix cat. It sleeps in my room, and the kitty litter box is in my bathroom. He thinks that the amount of hair is too much, and that I will get sick from the cat. However, I have no allergy to cats. What should I tell him to convince him that we shouldn't give our cat away? Should I move the kitty litter box or something? Thanks.

im 17 years old, and will most likely be having to give up the cat in a year since i will be going to college. once im in college, my parents will be traveling a lot and wont have time for the cat. but maybe if i live at home then i can stay with it. * we got our cat from a petco-type place, and it was dropped off by a person who didn't want it, and left without any notes on it. hence, i really want to keep it because it deserves it.

Just a thought: Pick up a cat brush and start brushing the cat regularly. He'll like it and maybe it will help convince your father. Still, to be honest his reasoning sounds pretty lame. He'll probably just try to come up with some other justification.

Brush the cat, use cat wipes [http://www.entirelypets.com/catwipes.html], and get an air purifier that should get rid of the excess hair. - I am allergic to cats, but I have two with very few problems. We bathe and brush our cats and have an air purifier.

Stay away from air purifiers that ionize. They're not good for you.

As for the cat box, clean it out every day and change the litter every 15 days depending on how much your cats tinkles :)

Cats are people too -- in a sense. They love you as much as you love them, perhaps not in the same way. Getting rid of a cat would be like giving away your younger sibling maybe not as bad for some people -- i happen to like my cats more than my younger siblings, but I know my cats better than them [I'm 24 btw, and my sibs are 16, 11 and 6.. much younger and I've been away from home for some time now]

You are far more likely to become sick from catching something at school or from a family member than from your cat. Have a talk (be polite) with your dad. Tell him how much you love your pet and ask him what you could do to make it more agreeable with him for you to keep your kitty. Tell him you will start brushing your cat every day and keep the litter box clean and odor free. I cannot imagine getting rid of one of my pets. I've always had a dog or two and cats and birds. They are part of the family and there is no such thing as giving them away!! Your dad will surely understand if you talk politely and ask him for suggestions. Good luck!

Don't give up your cat. Tell your dad cats have feelings and get attached to people and if you take it out of its environment it will be sad and upset and feel abandoned. It's just plain mean.
The litter box should have nothing to do w/the amount of hair. Is he upset w/the litterbox smell? If so, try switching to Tidy Cat small spaces litter and scoop EVERY DAY.
As for the hair, yes, start brushing it every day, that will help. There's a brush out there called the Furminator (sounds goofy, I know). Google it. You can buy it on line for $20-$25.

You probably can't convince him if his mind is made up. All you can do is plead with him not to. Your cat can't help it if he or she sheds.Try to keep the hair cleaned up and keep your cat brushed. Tell him that you love your cat.

You don't say how old you are but I would never risk being around someone who is threatening my cat.

there is a brush / comb called furminator. it really works. cats have feelings too and it isn't fair to get rid of them. he wouldn't get rid of you because your hair was shedding ( i hope) ; )
