I've read online that genetics is a reason for bad vision. I'm 20 and have had glasses since I was 11. Both of my parents do not have problems with vision, neither do my 4 brothers and sisters. I'm the only one in the entire family besides my grandmother that wears glasses for near-sightedness.

Also I have a -3.00 and a -3.25 on my contact perscription. Is this considered really bad? Or about normal?

Genetics is one of the causes. However, this doesn't mean that your immediate family will have it. The trait is made up of many alleles, so a couple has a sertain percentage chance of having a child with normal versus bad vision...so you um...lucked out.

The way any trait is desplayed is made up not only of the genes but of the environment. Schools, I found, do terrible things to a kid's eyesight. You want to make sure that your perscription is up to date. If its not, then you will strain more and this will cause even worse vision.

Likely, your eyes will continue to deteriorate for a couple of more years and stabilize around the age of 23. After the fact, you may talk to your doctor about things such as LASIX, or other eye improvements.

While not terrible, your perscription I would say is rather bad, unfortunately. I mean, any change for the worse is bad, but most people I know (including myself) wear around a -2 to -3 in contacts.

I hope this helped. It is a combination of my medical studies and personal experience.

Bad vision CAN BE genetic. Definitely not always. Bad vision can be caused by so many different things like sunlight, straining, etc. It's really hard to pinpoint it to just certain things. Sorry..not sure about your contact prescription. I do know that even wearing glasses or contacts usually makes your vision worse. That's why once you've been wearing them, then you go back a couple years later for your next eye exam, you will tend to find out your vision has worsened.
