If anyone is planning to get a dog in the (near) future and considering purchasing from a pet store, please read this. Then answer my question: After reading the article, are you still going to support puppymills by purchasing from a pet shop? Or will you adopt or find a reputable breeder?

Even if you're not planning on getting a dog soon, read it anyway. It's very informative.

Very good article...thanks for posting. Although...I'm sure some people will just shrug it off. :(

The Humane Society actually has footage of their trips to puppymills on their website...if anyone is interested in learning more look here... http://stoppuppymills.org/

Even at a young age, I was very concerned with this issue. As I read through one of my junior high English class journals...I realized my teacher must have been tired of reading page after page about animal rights. I really like what the investigator said at the end...something to the effect of we bred these animals to work for us and now we are exploiting them. Heartbreaking.

She became into extra precise than you think of. The Toy FoxTerrier became into created by using breeding the sleek Fox Terrier with Chihuahuas, Miniature Pinscher and Italian Greyhounds. of direction after putting all and sundry of those breeds interior the mixture, the preliminary breeders stored at it long adequate to 'restoration sort' and thereby created a sparkling breed, some thing the hybrid persons are actually not doing. yet nevertheless, look at any purebred and in case you look lower back far adequate you will discover mutts. as a results of fact breeds originate from blending different breeds or severe selective breeding interior of a discern breed you will continuously have situations the place to the untrained eye breed X would be improper for breed Y. and each in particular circumstances that's perfect to the experienced eye besides. Who by using sight on my own can tell the variation between a Toy Manchester Terrier and a Miniature Pinscher? Even expert canines judges conflict with this! (fairly with examples that don't conform nicely to reproduce standards)

Go figure it would be in Kansas. Since I'm from Kansas I'll be the first to bash our states government. I'm sure that we have very few inspectors that inspect these facilities that's why this couple got by with it for 14 years. Hell we just passed a animal cruelty law that makes it a felony not more than 2 years ago. Some sicko set a puppy, I think it was a rottweiler, on fire. The poor thing finally died of it's injuries. The thing with Kansas is there are alot of rural areas that people can hide these mills behind tall weeds and trees and it may take years to find them. At least they put one puppy mill out of business.

My dog died last week 12/11/07 ( Over 12 years old), Originally was abandoned (Threw out of a car). They took it in where I work & raised it as a pet. As it got older I would bring her home & care for her too. My point in this is that I would rather get a dog from a Shelter If I decide to get a new one. They are aslo in need of a loving & caring home too.

Even before I read this I had decided to purchase only from reputable breeders who genuinely care about their breed, or adopt animals from shelters in need of a home... but that article was still very useful. Thanks for the info. And Merry Christmas to you.

I get my dogs from individual breeders, that way I can go over there and see how they were raised. Not only are the dogs generally healthier and better adjusted, they also tend to be cheaper. There are a ton of breeders listed in the classifieds.
