Matthew 3 : 10 - 12

And NOW also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees : Therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance : But He that cometh after me is mighterier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear : He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and Fire.

This scripture deals with two very important aspects of believers.
1. The Holy Ghost ( the Spirit of God ), which all of Gods CHOSEN will receive. This empowers a believer to go forth in POWER to : Preach the Gospel in boldness, Do mighty works ( miracles ) , Witness ( Acts 5:32 ),. And was prophesied to come ( Revelation 19:10 ).
2. Baptised with FIRE : This is THE purifier God sends with the baptism of the Holy Ghost to work in a saints life to get them ready for the Marriage ( without spot or blemish ).
There are times in a saints life that it seems all Hell has broke loose ( consider Job ). If a saint isn't going through Hell at times, they are ready to be translated, or, they are a phony.

Malachi 3 : 1 - 4 ...works in conjunction , being the main prophesy concerning this :
Behold I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before Me : And the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come ( Acts 2:2 ) to His temple, even the messenger of the covenant ( Jeremiah 31:31 - 34 ) , whom ye delight in : Behold He shall come, saith the Lord of hosts. BUT WHO MAY ABIDE the day of His coming : And who shall stand when He appeareth ? For He is like a refiners fire, and like fullers soap : And He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver : and He shall purify the sons of Levi ( Hebrews 7:26 ....Revelations 1:6 ......1st. Peter 2:9 ), and purge them as gold and silver, that THEY MAY OFFER UNTO THE LORD AN OFFERING IN RIGHTEOUSNESS. Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years.
Many stumble at this purification process, and some are destroyed for lack of knowledge ( 1st. Peter 4:12,13 .........5:9 ...........2nd. Timothy 3:7 ......1st. Corinthians 2:14 ...............Hosea 4:6 ).

As we pray for the saints to come to the point of purification that will " usher in the Day of The Lord ", the Lord works in the saints with the Purifier ( FIRE ) to get the ready.

Note : Burn now, or burn forever...

Baptism of water is but half a baptism, and requires the companion of baptism of fire (the Holy Ghost) to be complete.

What results from baptism with fire?

Luke 3:16, 17: “He [Jesus Christ] will baptize you people with . . . fire. His winnowing shovel is in his hand to clean up his threshing floor completely . . . The chaff he will burn up with fire that cannot be put out.” (Its destruction would be forever.)

Matt. 13:49, 50: “That is how it will be in the conclusion of the system of things: the angels will go out and separate the wicked from among the righteous and will cast them into the fiery furnace.”

Luke 17:29, 30: “On the day that Lot came out of Sodom it rained fire and sulphur from heaven and destroyed them all. The same way it will be on that day when the Son of man is to be revealed.”

Not the same as baptism with holy spirit, which was for disciples

Acts 1:5: “John, indeed, baptized with water, but you [Jesus’ faithful apostles] will be baptized in holy spirit not many days after this.”

Acts 2:2-4: “Suddenly there occurred from heaven a noise just like that of a rushing stiff breeze, and it filled the whole house in which they were sitting. And tongues as if of fire became visible to them and were distributed about, and one sat upon [but did not envelop or immerse] each one of them, and they all became filled with holy spirit and started to speak with different tongues, just as the spirit was granting them to make utterance.”

Receiving the Holy Ghost

The words were spoken by John the Baptist: "I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but He that cometh after me . . . shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with FIRE," Matthew 3:11.

Next, John said to them, "He" -- Jesus Christ -- "shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with FIRE: whose fan is in His hand, and He will throughly purge His floor, and gather His wheat into the garner; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable FIRE," Matthew 3:11-12.

John was speaking to both sinners and those to be saved. When he said Christ shall baptize YOU -- the YOU included both. The saved He would baptize with His SPIRIT -- and the others with the FIRE!

Judgment. Fire in the Bible is always an analogy to judgment. Read the passage and you will see it talks of judgment.

Matthew 3:11 "...He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."
