my uncle does his own mending. when he got married just after the war (wwii) he presented his wife with some jeans that needed mending. she told him to either throw them out and buy new or learn how to sew his own damn pants. hes a tight wad so he mends his own. i do too. when i was in scouts my leader was a drill sargent in nam. we were all required to sew own own patches on our shirts. if someones mom sewed one on he cut it off and told the boy to do it himself. of course he talked with the boys mom afterwards and the mom understood that he was teaching selfsufficiency. all of us for about a 15 year period in scouts know how and do our own mending. im a logger/welder. the drill sargent scout master well he was a drill sargent. the assistant scout master is a trucker/korea vet. uncle is a retired foundry worker/farmer/heavy equipment operator. other uncle was a machinest/tool and die and he did his own mendoing too. also my grampa a wwi vet/logger/miner/foundry worker/and cattle rustler with his bros when he was a teen. all high testosterone jobs. none gay. in fact all of my big bad burley friends that have big bad burley men jobs do their own mending. mainly because they are all tight wads and their wives refuse to. lol. cleaning, now thats a different story. particularily with their trucks. all old, all work horses, all been to hell and back many times, all sturdy dirty cluttered trucks full of tools.
i dont know if any of them could make the outfits that some mentioned but ther sure as hell are able to make the awsome sounding seat covers and fix their clothers or make canvas tents.

No, not in the least. My dad uses a sewing machine too. When I was in high school, he sewed his own seat covers for his truck and made them out of a bunch of his old blue jeans. He didn't have the money to go buy any and had a bunch of old pants he wasn't using so made use of them. My friends thought that the seat covers were awesome and all wanted denim seat covers for their vehicles after they saw those. My friends thought my dad's idea was pretty cool and no one thought he was gay.

That's awesome that he is self sufficient. NO WAY would I be embarrassed. I would have him teach her how to sew. Sewing is a lost talent( not for everyone of course) My dad was a hard worker and the bread winner in the family. The only my dad new how to do ( before my mom died) was make grilled cheese sandwiches.
YOU GO DAD!!!!

No if i had an active dad I would be very proud of the fact that he could sew that doesn't make him gay it just makes him cool. My mom can't sew well so if something rips i have to take them to my grandmother.

My grandfather could sew (and actually spent part of his WWI enlistment sewing airplane wings); my father could sew; my husband can sew. And my MIG welding teacher prefers that his students know how to sew, as it makes the transition to the techniques of welding easier -- you can already use hands and feet together, but for different tasks.

I think most people would be impressed!
Sewing is not limited to just women.
Some of the best designers are men... and all of them can sew.
