I just purchased a new Abu Garcia Ambassadeur Big Game fishing reel and am wondering what would be a recommended rod for me. I like going surf fishing for stripers and perch as well as fishing for rockfish off of rock points and in coves. I think I prefer a rod in the 9 foot range. I've only used cheapo rods from 8 to 11 feet long. What would be some ideal brands and models for me to check out that would make it capable for me to cast out pretty far and take some abuse from the surf and rocks. Thanks.

One of my surf rods is an old original Calcutta. It.s 11 ft and I have the ABU 7000 big game on it. Be sure to check around and see whats for sale used as well as new. It seems like I've seen allot of junk poles out there in the last few years. I can average about 125yrds with that set up on the surf. 40 yr exp Northwest Pacific guide

St. Croix, Lamiglas, G. Loomis are three top quality fishing rods ideal for surf fishing. Each rod is made with a special type of graphite that gives you distance on cast and durability for jetty fishing. Also it's best to use a 10-foot rod from the surf, you'll get better distance than a 9-footer. If you are on a tight budget try a 10-foot Shakespeare Ugly Stik, best bang for the buck.

Bass Pro Shops makes some really good musky rods. I bought one for $20 on sale at half price. It's an excellent rod that has stood up to the test of big pike and musky fishing. I've never seen such a quality rod for so cheap.

Choosing a rod depends on where you fish. Pond fishing requires a hollow rod. Easier to handle and doesn't tire you easily. Sea fishing requires a full rod. Ugly stick is a good choice. Try Kunnan too. The length doesn't matter. It is how you cast that matters.

If you buy a good one i will tell you that reel will go like the wind, they are brilliant to cast with no noise, so don't buy a cheap rod unless you cant afford a good one, many good makes out there so try these
