We are having Christmas dinner at our home. It's going to be a small get-together. I don't know if I'm going to cook or just order a complete meal from the local grocery store. I have a relative that never compliments my cooking and I think that's rude. I mean how can you just sit there and eat without saying anything? I always tell her that her food tastes good. I know this sounds petty but this is just one thing out of many that drives me nuts about this woman. Anyway, would you cook for her or just order food? It's only her, her hubby, and their child who are coming to dinner. What would you do?

It is one thing if she doesn't complement the chef... but something else altogether if she is critical.
If you feel the need, after everyone digs in, ask aloud how everything is and if there is anything you can get anyone... like a good hostess.
You can also change things up by requesting the other couple bring certain favorite dishes to share... and give her a choice of what she wants to bring. She may be delighted.

If you are tired of putting youself out, then yes, buy the packaged dinner... they are pretty good.
My MIL used to do that and believe me, it was an improvement over her own soggy cornbread dressing.

I enjoy cooking so I would probably go that route but I completely understand how you feel underappreciated. It is polite to say something...if it is out of your way to cook and would prefer to order the meal. Do it! She is rude anyways. Dont spend hours preparing something no respect. Do what works for you!

I'd cook her a meal she would never forget. Meatloaf with cat food in it, gold fish from the pet store laid out on lettuce, bird seed inside of pie crust. Then I'd tell her it's a raving exotic food and only people like herself of high class are known to smack thier lips and ask for seconds and possibly thirds.

Do whatever makes you feel the most comfortable. I don't know that she's rude, just because she doesn't compliment your cooking, maybe she doesn't see how she's offending you. If you don't like to cook, then order in, if you love cooking, then don't. It's really..that simple.

I would tell them I was going out of town for Christmas this year, and let them provide their own meal.
