Besides Dale Sr? ?
The best NASCAR driver ever was without a doubt Richard Petty. They don't call him the king because he wears a crown!
The SECOND best to date would be Dale Sr.

NASCAR goes through cycles. Richard Petty in his time Dale Sr in his time, right now it's Jeff Gordon. The three are difficult to compare due to the drastic changes mandated. With restrictor plates, pit row speed limits and now that darn COT things are changing again. NASCAR is becoming a spec series without individual character. We're in a Hendrick era right now.

I`ve thought about this question a long time before I attempted to answer it,
I think the richest man is the one with the most money or assets.
The largest is the one with the most pounds.
winner in a sports event, the one that scores the most points
Therefore the best driver would be the one with the most victories
1- Richard Petty
2- David Pearson
3- Jeff Gordon
the only one of those three with a chance to get any better is Gordon - the other two have retired........

It seems like the "Best Ever" is just that "The Best Ever". Wouldn't the besides be defined as: "Second to Best"?
The Best would be Dale Sr. right?

I've got David Pearson just AHEAD of Sr on my all time greatest drivers list but that is merely my opinion. It depends on what your own criteria is for how you rate the drivers. Also, I would have Jeff Gordon just after Sr right now but that will probably change by the time his career is finished.

You can't argue numbers, and as much of a Dale Earnhardt fan as I was/am, he never surpassed Richard Petty's 200 wins.
When it comes to full bodied stock cars, Richard Petty's still the King.
