Well, the reason my dad did it to me is because that is how his dad raised him. I went to counseling and learned better. I also think there is a stress factor involved and an inability of the abuser to handle stress in a productive way. My dad always used to flip over the tiniest things when he came home from work. (Stress)
Sometimes it is caused by a sociopathic personality. A Sociopath does not have the normal emotional connections to people that others do. It could be caused by Alcohol and drug abuse. ( I have a cousin who abandoned her kids because of drugs)
The overall answer is that the Abuser does not possess the skills or emotional abilities to handle a situation in a productive manner. The cause is always due to something with the abuser, the abused is NEVER the reason.
EDIT: for the person who says lower family morals are the reason, I can tell you... my dad was a Christian AND both my parents stayed married the entire time I was being raised. That has nothing to do with it. That was just a personal agenda that you have made up in your own mind.

i believe the causes are.. children having babies at a early age.. and they take it out on the child and i think drugs are the other reason for neglect. they don't have time to deal with a kid they only worry about that next fix. and then there is the ones that just cant deal with kids or they have no money, . its sad but there is lots of kids being abused or neglected .

Ok, you're saying that there are "causes" for child abuse? If you mean define child abuse like what is considered child abuse or neglect, well raping your kid to leaving them in the car for 8 ours while you Christmas shop are options, this question is a bit too general, care to narrow it down?
Some men feel like they need to rape a six year old, but maybe they were raped as a child, or neglected, or they feel like they're not good enough for anyone, those are reasons....

The causes of child abuse are "Parents" being *** h***s, and children whose not standing up for themself. I'm serious. You are lack of common sense if you think this is not true. Sorry for my language but that's the right word to describe those people who dare to abuse their children. They are crazy.

The abortion movment certainly has not helped and I have long said it would carry over to devaluing the lives of toddlers and having contempt for them.
Also, people don't even think that they need to be married any longer to have children, and divorce with broken homes and "boyfriends" and are the order of the day.
I assure you that the breakdown of the family, premarital sex and living together are all a part of this. The liberal agenda is behind all of this. It is to blame and it's responsible for our downfall.
Also what the person says below about someone's idiotic sports team losing.

Hateful parents who didn't want kids, but don't want to admit it. Or, just use the kids for financial assistance to satisfy their own greed.
