I think the most recent book with a lot of good scholarship is:
The Week the World Stood Still: Inside the Secret Cuban Missile Crisis, by Sheldon Stern who is a historian at the JFK presidential library. I have not read it but was told it was very good.

If you want a first-hand account read: Thirteen Days: A Memoir of the Cuban Missile Crisis, written in 1969 by RFK.
