The Battle of Berlin was the last major battle of WW2. It could have easily been avoided because the hierarchy of the German Military knew that the war was lost . But Hitler refused to surrender, Many believe he stayed in Berlin to be sure that Germany fought to the death.

The Allies had a plan to send paratroopers into Berlin but Eisenhower stopped the Idea so we wouldn't lose troops in a Battle that was as good as over.

It was the last battle of WWII. The Soviets advanced on the German capital to finally crush Hitler. Naturally, Hitler had no intent of surrendering and the remaining Germans fought hard out of fear of what the Russians would do to them and their city.

I hope that you are asking two seperate questions as to Why and Who ?
WHY they fought is to capture the enemie's Capitol city which will be defended because of national pride ; it also reveals to the nations of the world a signal victory often equivalent to the end of the war . It is one of the fundamental tenets of warfare to impose one nation's will over the other- a clearly won victory .
Please see my response to your question as to WHO .
Happy & safe holidays ! :0)
