My son is 19months and still in his crib. The problem is he's huge (not fat just solid and tall) and getting him in and out of the crib is pretty hard on my back. I'm short and using a step stool to help me out.
He doesn't climb out of the crib and sleeps really well in it the only thing is he sleeps all around it, not just on one side.
so i'm scared he'll fall off even with bed rails

I moved my daughter to a twin bed when she was 19 months old and she hasn't looked back. She was so excited and is sleeping much better. We bought a twin set and put in on the floor, so she could get in and out on her own.

If your son is really tall, then I wouldn't waste your money on a toddler bed, they aren't much longer than a normal crib. Just go straight for a twin.

Good Luck!

We moved our son into a twin size bed when he was 16ish months old. Since one side of his bed has a rail (it's the top bed to bunk beds) we only had to put a rail on the outside of the bed. The rail goes almost the whole length of the bed and while I'm not going to say it's impossible, but it would be difficult to fall out with such a narrow opening on either side of the rail. If you do use rails though, make sure there is one on BOTH sides of the bed because otherwise they may get wedged in between the mattress and the wall. We noticed he wasn't comfortable in his crib. It got to the point where even with a mattress pad he was putting his whole body up on the pillow trying to get comfy. We bought him a very comfy mattress pad for his twin bed and he has slept wonderfully ever since. It did take him quite a while to realize he could get in/out of the bed himself. We store an extra twin mattress under his bed, so for a while we pulled that out just a bit so he'd have a step to get in/out until figured it out. Maybe he's sleeping "all over" because he isn't as comfortable and then it again, it could just be the way he sleeps. My suggestion though is skip the toddler bed. A crib mattress is downright uncomfortable, it doesn't give him any more room and it's just extra furniture you have to deal with later on anyway. Also, we just 'did it.' He got out of his crib one morning and was put to bed in a twin sized bed that night. He didn't care because a. he was so young & b. he was comfortable.

Well if he can walk and you do not have stairs that he will get up and fall down. I would say go for it. If anything keep his bed in his room also so if it does not work you will still have his crib. I would get the small toddler bed then if he does fall it is not that far to go. My daughter got into a toddler bed when she was 18 months and did good in it. The only thing that sucked was when they wake up they are up and out of the room.

We moved our son into a toddler bed when he was 20 months because he was climbing out of his crib at will. He adjusted immediately to it and with it being so low to the floor falling out has not been an issue he also sleeps all around it.

If you move him to a toddler bed he should be fine. Since you are concerned about him falling out of bed, this is something I did when my guys were little, I bought an extra toddler mattress and placed it slightly under the toddler bed (it's a nice fit since the beds are made low to the ground) so if they fell out they would land on it.

You probably should move him to a bed, Sounds like he is a big boy. Lol. Have you thought of trying a daybed. They have rails on all sides but one. Or try putting the mattress of a twin bed on the floor(that way he doesn't have ar to fall if he does) until he is used to not having rails.
