The Best way actually is not to take a tour. tours usually give visitors a two dimensional look of the city, and they leave thinking they know everything about a city. The best way is to experiance the city for yourself depending on the amount of time you have make some local friends and have them show you where the secret heartbeats of the city lay.

You can't beat a good guide book. They are $20 tools that save you money. Make your own tour, on your schedule and on your terms...I never travel without one. Rick Steves is the best.

yes, of course. you can read books about it. you can look at pictures and videos. you can study maps. you can read descriptions and talk to people who have been there.
it's just different than taking a tour. depends on exactly what you want to learn about. ie hard to get the smells unless you are actually there.

Of course you can. Just "google" it and you'll find information about any city that you care to look up. Trust me! I google everything.
