My lovely female pap recently died from a collapsed trachea. In one week she went from an active healthy dog to death. No-one can tell me how this happened. She had no trauma, accident etc and her heart and lungs were good. They couldn't do anything here in NZ as the tubes have to come from USA and she couldn't last that long.

This dog has never been on a lead for the past 8 yrs as she was obedient and always walked where she could walk alonside me i parks, riverbeds etc.

While not usually life threatening, collapsing trachea can cause severe breathing difficulties in toy breeds. The trachea is a soft tube, and with this condition it squeezes shut when the dog inhales--much like if you sucked in too hard on a paper straw. It can be helped by medicine, but surgerical options are possible. It is my understanding that surgery does not help long term and can carry great risk. Here is more info:

This is another reason to use harnesses on small breeds instead of collars.
