in a lot of cities they have a welcoming committee if you call the city hall they may be able to get you in touch with them and the welcoming committee should be able to help you find out things you need to know about the city or you can try to meet one of your neighbors and ask them what you need to know

Chill at the hotel for a while, then take a short tour, and then go to a place to eat, and the chill at the hotel again

Do your homework BEFORE leaving home. Auto clubs are a good source, or just Google the name of the city.

The first thing I do is stop and get a map and find out if there is a tourist information center. Then I find out about hotels, shopping, and restaurants.
