Sigh. Self harmed from the age of 14-17, stopped. 19 Now and training to be a childrens nurse (end of 1st year), and I'm unwell again, mentally quite unwell. I think it may be the course doing this to me, maybe not, though quite likely. Don't know whether I can work with children like this.

You should seek help. You could see if your school has a counseling program. If not, there are community mental health centers everywhere that can provide you with a doc/therapist. Clearly you have the ability to see that you are going downhill, which is a good thing. Nip it in the bud and seek help.

Instead of harming, try harmless things that hurt like holding a handful of ice if you feel the urge for harm.

As a nurse, you do not need to specialize. I have never heard of training to work with children until after you are a graduate nurse. The stress of school is probably making you want to harm yourself. Speak to a therapist or counsler asap. They may be able to show you a better way to handle the stress. I am assuming you are not suicidal. If you are, go for a mental health evaluation right away or call a suicide prevention hot line. Good luck.

talk with your student advisor, and try to get some guidence. It may be possible for you to continue as a general nursing student. If you dont think nursing suits you, because you find it to disturbing , you may be able to switch to a different course.

If you dont get enough help from a student advisor , try getting an appointment with the dean of students or someone senior on the nursing staff .

You are stronger than you may think , because you stopped harming yourself, but its important to watch how you feel and make sure you dont start again.

If you feel it neccessary you might ask for a years deferrment, and take a break from studies. Find a job you can cope with and try to enjoy your life . Then go back to it in 6 months or a year.

i am so sorry that your past years were rough, but it sounds like you are trying to better yourself. but if you arent doing very good mentally, you might want to see a counselor. there are alot of good ones out there. this is only your first year of training to be a childrens nurse and it sounds like there is alot of pressure. if you are unsure of working with children, then you might want to check into doing something else. but my advice is to see a counselor they can help and let you know what they think you should do. good luck

Pressure can bring back significant depression from the past. You may just need to take a break. Don't second guess yourself, just get some rest and remember how you learned to stop. You can handle it. Have faith in yourself.

Your school should have a counselor you can see. Check with the health program or a student hotline. Good luck.
