Oatmeal baths, and calamine lotion along the sores. Put gloves or something on his hands so that he doesn't aimlessly itch, because that happens a lot, sometimes people itch without knowing. Try Vaseline on spots in between the sores to sooth some of the pain and chapped skin.

I remember back when I had chicken pox that I took hot/warm baths with baking soda that helped get rid of the itch. I also had to wear socks on my hands at night so that I wouldn't scratch when I was asleep.

Cool baths. Hot baths make the itch worse. Calomine/caladryl are good too. Or, you might want to make a paste of baking soda and water to apply to the rash. Before you take him to the doctor, call them. The doctor might want to make special arrangement to see him such as getting him in and out quickly so other patients aren't exposed. Give tylenol for fever if present. Benadryl might help soothe the itching too.

He really should see the doctor.
But, in the meantime
Benedryl for children.
Caladryl lotion, for the itching; dab it on with a 100% cottonball.
Aveeno for a sponge bath, tell him to pour the Aveeno water over his body, but do not scrub. Pat, don't rub, when drying.
If he scratches, it will cause scaring.
Suggest, he put socks on his hands to sleep.
And you need to launder his sleepwear and sheets & pilllowcase each day.

Put him in a really hot bath if he can handle it, or a cold one with ice cubes in it, or an oatmeal bath works too.
Don't put lotion on it, trust me. The oils in it don't help out the chicken pox and make it worse and more itchy and want more lotion and it just makes it really bad.

Why didn't you have him vaccinated for it? No reason to let a child have chicken pox these days.
Well, soothe him with oatmeal baths, and calamine or something.

An oatmeal bath may help, calamine lotion may help. There is not much you can do for it but let it run its course. try keeping him distracted with tv, games, etc. Good Luck. Tell him it will go away soon.
