I noticed some new HD TVs have lights on both sides behind the screen to light up a dark room....but why?? is watching tv in the dark bad or sumthing?

If the TV is the only source of light in a room, your eyes are constantly adjusting as the scene changes and you miss things and develop headaches.

Having a low lite behind the TV or to the side solves these problems.

Yes - well known fact from the early days of TV.
