Yes, if you are truly sorry for what you did. You can't just recite the words like a robot and expect to be forgiven.

Your question depends on your Christian religious belief.

Catholic:

All lesser sins (venial) are forgiven during the Mass.
However, a greater sin (mortal) requires a confession through a priest.

Protestant:

Sadly, this group follows practically the exact book a Catholic uses but fails to understand the truth.
An ignorance toward the Lord is within their path of belief.
However, one cannot place blame on this group since this is how they were raised.

All they have to read is Matthew 16:19

Oddly, practially every protestant minister uses 500 lines of text to talk around this direct message.
Countless books concerning the latter verse are sold each year to evade the simple message in how to properly confess sins.

Three obstacles created by satan prevent thousands/millions from going to a confession:

1. Pride
2. Ego
3. Embarrassment.

Mortal sins such as impure thoughts and sinning by onself pose an embarrassment to the sinner.
Wow, does satan have a field day concerning the latter sins, he uses the fault of embarrassment to prevent a confession!

Pride and ego are also at the top of the list when saying
"Why should i confess my sins to another man?"

Ok, i will tell you why:
Because, this is how Jesus intended for us to have our sin removed, again read Matthew 16:19.

Why is proper confession so difficult?
A priest has listened to practically every form of sin possible, do you think he finds humor in sin?
The latter Holy man is their to provide absolution, take advantage of this beautiful sacrament!

It is the most direct way to ak for forgiveness!

Praying is talking to God, one-on-one. This time is yours and His, as it should be every single day.

If you still feel the pain or guilt by the sin, it is very appropriate to meet with you pastor or priest for 5 minutes. This time may offer you the comfort and relief that you need to move on in your life and forget that sin that haunts you.

Give your leader a call and meet with them for a short confession. You will feel so much better afterward, that you won't even know where the energy and spirit came from!!!

Trust me on this

There are steps to repentance - and yes praying is one of them.

The others are that you must realise and acknowledge that you have done wrong, then you must make restitution - if it is required - either to the people or are wronged or too the Lord, then you need to ask for forgiveness from them and from the Lord. The finally you must resolve never to that particular thing again - at least to commit to striving not to do it again.

Of course. However, your conviction of your sin should make you want to change that behavior. Praying for frogivness and then doing the same thing isn't true repentance, is it?

You can be forgiven of your sins by praying.

You repent of your sins by asking forgiveness and turning a way from your sins.

Hope that helps!

It depends on what that sin was. If you sinned against someone, for instance if you stole something, you also need to go to that person, organization, institution, etc. and confess it to them and ask their forgiveness. God said if you come to him and your brother or sister has aught against you, go to them first and make it right with them. But praying is never a mistake as long as you are humble and you mean it.

In my religion you can repent of minor sins by praying for forgiveness, as long as you do it with a sincere heart and are truly sorry for the sin.
But for major sins, you have to go to your bishop and confess your sin. Then he counsels you and helps you through the process of repentance.

to be truthful if you have not prayed and ask Jesus to forgive you for your sins and accepted him as your personal lord he can't here your prayers. but if you are saved by the blood of Jesus and have a personal relationship with him he will here when you ask for forgiveness in the name of JESUS and ask him to help you in the areas you keep repeating the same sins over and over but don't sin on purpose after he has told you through the Holy Spirit that this is wrong ,because once you know your sinning on purpose you are sinning against GOD and he knows you are doing it on purpose and are not trying to grow in your faith.

Yes you can, if you're sincere and humble before the Lord and you mean it. God forgives all sin (except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit). You can pray to God in private and ask for His forgiveness and repent, yes - :) That IS how we ask for forgiveness from God: by praying to Him from the heart.

1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
