I am buying a computer after new yrs and have been looking at the choices of operating systems. I am a gamer so getting a mac is out plus there aint a place in my town that works on Macs anyways. I have a choice between windows Vista or Windows XP. Recently i have heard alot of thigns that have gotten me concerned that Vista aint ready yet and that for the time being i should stick with Windows XP. I am a gamer so being able to play games and do stuff on the internet is important to me(I am running Win 98 SE right now) When i get the new Computer which should it Have Windows XP or Vista?

I heard or read recently that Yahoo! is no longer supporting Windows 98. You may wish to check into that one. As regards operating systems, Vista is still a major memory hog and rather expensive. It is not anywhere near as stable as Windows XP. I am 64 and would strongly encourage you to choose Windows XP for as long as you possibly can. You may, one day, have to switch over to Vista, but put it off as long as you can. I have this on the authority of a number of people here in Maine. I also have a friend in Bradenton, Florida who made that distinction a month or so ago to me, and told me to be very sure I stayed away from Vista, as it is nowhere near as good an operating system as Windows XP. So, to answer your question, please choose Windows XP. You have more margin of error with it and it stays together longer and is just better all around. I hope others will tend to echo what I am telling you here, and by all means, make sure you check it all out before you make your move. Thanks for reading this. if you buy a PC with vista don't go for the basic home, it's(so i'm told) very slow, as pc have now come down in price you tend just to get the bare minimum that will run

XP has better speed and for a gamer this also has more games that can be played (you may want to keep your Win 98SE for the current games you playas both XP and Vista may not play them)

I would say go for XP - if you can

but please read other answers before making your choices

best regards Barry

well its tricky one because sooner or later
Microsoft will discontinue XP support and will keep supporting Vista.

however Vista is HUGE RAM consumer average requirement for Vista 2GB of RAM. if you're a gamer I'd suggest wait untill SP2 comes up spring/summer of 2008.
most Pc companies force people to buy VISTA. some give gives you a chice between XP and VISTA.

IMHO I'd not rush things.

for Games you will need huge amount of RAM between 2-4 GB and some games and hardware might not work on Vista.

so stick with XP for now because you can always upgrade to Vista.

Most of the Vista compatibility problems you hear about are attempted upgrades, you'll be OK with a new computer with Vista. (Anyone who says "Vista sucks" is repeating what other people say because other people say it.)

I'd guess your current computer is 8-9 years old. Think you'll keep the new computer until 2015? Think Microsoft will be supporting Win XP 14 years after its release?

Vista sucks but will improve later on. Get Vista with SP1 installed. If you get Vista u don't need to worry about upgrading much compare to XP.

Go with the Future---Vista Ultmate----XP will soon be as popular as 2000 was. Still people like it.
Let me say this----it ain't the OS anymore with games----its (Is your computer good enough to run a certain game)
But if you just want t play games---Play Station 3, with a Plasma Screen.

I got a new computer a couple of months ago, with Vista.

IT SUCKS!!!!!
The biggest reason is because it
is not compatible with any of my photo graphics programs. But there are numerous little reasons as well. I will probably wipe it and start over with XP.
