On the weekend, I went to visit my sister and meet the guy she is seriously involved with. She had mentioned to me that he was a person of color and also an actor in movies. Of course I googled him and yes, his bio was there along with some handsome pictures of him. My sister is very fair with very long blond hair and quite beautiful inside and out. When he arrived, I was surprised that he was very, very dark which did not show in his pictures which is why I was surprised. I hid my surprise and soon found out that he is witty, charming and a truly caring and loving person, at which time his color just went out of my mind. Now I am home and I am wondering if, because of my initial shock, I am prejudiced against black people. I have never been around black people much as I live on Vancouver Island where you seldom see black people. I really hope I am not prejudiced, but I am troubled about my reaction. Comments, please.

it's not unusual for people like actors etc to use pictures that make them look 'better' or 'younger' than they really are. unfortunately in our society lighter is considered better and probably gets more opportunities. so he's making a good business move there. think of it this way; if he was much younger or older or taller or shorter than his pictures appeared you probably would have been shocked, too. you have to ask if you were simply surprised that he was different than the pictures or if you actually expected worse once you saw how dark he was. later when you know him better you can tell him of this experience and see what he says. if you in your heart also belive that darker is worse (as most of society including black people do deep inside) then you might need to address that.

No, I think you were just surprised because of what he looked like in real life as opposed to the most likely touched up photograph you found online. You mention that he's caring and witty which tell me that you are judging him on his personality rather than his looks. Unless you believe that his worth is based on the color of his skin (ie you don't like him just because he's black), you are not acting predjudice from what I can tell.

no, your not prejudiced. people are pretty much the same, not matter the color. so don't freak out, as long as he shows your sister respect, i think you'll be fine. as you get to know him, all will probably feel comfortable enough to discuss your worries

i do not think you are prejudice. it is not as if you were appalled by his appearance or heritage. you were only misled by pictures to believe that he looked different than he does in real life.
