I have been aChristian for 8 years now and I have asked God to fill me with the Holy Spirit on many occasions and I feel He has done so.At the same time I have read in the bible the proof of receiving the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues and I have read books on this as well.I have prayed to recieve this gift and nothing has happened.
My question is ,How did you receive this gift ?
Is it a requirement of God in order to be accepted into Heaven?
Why would most everyone in my family be able to do this but me?
Any help in this area would be very much appreciated.

Jen... I have met several truly gifted Christians whom haven't gotten the tongues at their baptism of the Holy Spirit... some years later 1 had finally gotten it, but don't know about the others.

How much do you want it? Are you holding back because of fear of some kind? Have you just asked God about it?

Here's a suggestion...YOU have to open your mouth and give it utterance. While in prayer, thank God for giving it to you and then try saying, in the name of Jesus, Father, grant me a personal tongue...open your mouth and start praising God as you regularly would, and thank God and Jesus for your tongue, keep on praising, and thanking...and believing...

If that fails, try try again...and thank God every day for giving it to you even though you don't see it happenning :) If all else fails, have someone lay hands on you and pray together, open your mouth expecting it..

I've heard of people doing it that way and finally succeeding, try opening your mouth and letting your tongue and voice make sounds like you heard your family speak it,...if you don't, ask God again why, and test the spirits to make sure it is Him speaking

Father, in the name of Jesus we ask that you answer your child about the Gift of tongues and if it be thy Will, I ask that you give your child the personal prayer tongue. Thankyou Lord in jesus name, amen. Praise you Father Praise you Jesus, Amen.

***Barbara E...beg to disagree about a large portion of what you said. My personal tongue may be small, but, it has served to help me in many area's of my walk, and has been a lifeline many times. It is not a requirement to get into heaven.

Being filled with the Holy Spirit means being under the control of the Holy Spirit.

"Tongues' simply means another language that is unknown to the speaker. It is not the most important gift.

I Cor 12:29-31 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

The answer to this question is no. Everyone isn't an apostle or a prophet, or a miracle worker. All don't have the gift of healing or of tongues.

I was told that i wasn't saved because I couldn't speak in tongues! I am saved by the blood of Yashua, Christ Jesus, not by speaking another language!

Seek the greatest gift which is love. :) May the Lord keep you safely in the palm of His hand.

It is not a requirement. If you asked for A release of God's Holy Spirit into your life then God has answered that prayer.

Tongues seems to be a gift that is harder to access or surrender your self to in modern western culture. When I received the empowering of the Holy Spirit I did not speak in tongues right away and when I was prayed over specifically for the gift I had trouble "yielding" to it.

While people were praying over me for the gift finally someone told me that i must not speak English but keep speaking. Then someone said that I would start out speaking anything that I could hear others saying in the group as long as it was not English. I did this and as they predicted it morphed into my own prayer language, right away.

Though St. Paul says that it is a lesser gift he does also say that he wishes everyone had that gift and I believe it is well worth the effort to receive this gift. It is highly helpful for prayer, discernment, and is very relaxing.

It also I think is a very beneficial gift if you use your mind a lot and need to connect with God in a truly supernatural way. It forces you to not be able to use your intellect, and rely on the Holy Spirit to hear from God for you.

I received the Holy Spirit, including the urge to speak in tongues at the very time I confessed to God and told Him that I believe in His Son, Jesus Christ.

It doesn't mean that you have the gift of tongues.

If you really want to know God, set time, more than a day if you can, to be alone with the Bible, God and you. Turn off the radio, television and whatever else is in your normal routine. I did that and God really opened up a lot for me. I became clear on my current path, and closer to Him.

It is not required to speak in tongues to be saved. Remember, you will have all sorts of doctrines out there. The more you study God's word the more you will be resistant to false teachings. Become resistant to false teachings then by getting into His word more than you are.

I don't know of any passage in the Bible that says the proof of receiving the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues. The tongues the apostles spoke in were other languages that those hearing and never studied but understood, and the writers of the NT said not to do it unless there were an interpreter. You should look up every scripture you can find about speaking in tongues to get the correct view on the subject.

Oh no, sister, the gift of speaking in tongues is not a requirement for Heaven; only true faith in the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus is required!

Gifts of the Holy Spirit (like speaking in tongues) can take many forms, according to the perfect will of the Father. In fact a person's true spiritual gift may not even be noticeable at all until a situation comes along where it's needed, and then BAM! The person suddenly realizes they are able to do something they never could before, and it's exactly what needs to be done or said at exactly that moment. Our Father knows exactly what each person needs, at what time, in order to bring glory to God. We must trust in Him always!

So please, don't be anxious or impatient about your spiritual gift. You'll have it when you need it; that's guaranteed.

Merry Christmas, and may God bless you greatly!

The holy spirit is God's "free gift," which he gladly grants to those who sincerely seek and request it. A right heart is the key factor, but knowledge and conformity to God's requirements are also essential factors. (Acts 2:38; Luke 11:9-13; Acts 15:8)
Also, the apostle Paul, under inspiration, ranked speaking in tongues as a lesser gift and pointed out that in a congregation he would rather speak five words with his mind (understanding) than 10,000 words in a tongue. (1Corinthians 14:11, 13-19)

The gift of tongues is just that, a gift. It is not a requirement to go to Heaven. The only requirement for that is that you accept the Lord as your Savior and believe on Him! I will tell you when I received the gift, I was not sure I had it in the beginning! I was afraid to speak it out and unsure how to do it. I found that just by praising the Lord with lifted hands and getting in the true spirit of praise without letting outside influences affect me, that the words just began to flow out and I realized that it was there!! Once you realize the gift is there for you and truly accept it and learn to speak it out, then from that point on it will just flow during prayer and times of praise regularly! I hope this helps! God bless you!

The Bible is written in many languages and there are many people that speak other languages so that is what talking in tongues is today. Anything else has no relevance to gifts what would be the point to talking in a language that no one could understand. God is a god of unity no division. The world is unified by translating languages into what can be understood. Learn what it is to help others learn the truth of the Bible that is a wonderful gift to have that can be given to others.

That is not your gift. The better gift is prophesying. I have never received the gift of tongues, but the Holy Spirit is within me. You may be able to interpret the tongues. Without an interpreter tongues are of no benefit to the church. Just to the believer speaking to God.
