There is actually some truth to your joke. The work was quoted by some of the Church fathers and was read in some of the congregations of the early Church. There is little doubt that the author was a first century Christian and very well have been a member of the 70. I doubt that the author was St. Barnabas because the writing lacks the inspiration of other Scriptural works. But, I believe the main reason [speculation only] it never made it to canon was because no one could verify the author.

Because the person who wrote it spelled Baranbas's name wrong.
