i got accepted to FIT in Manhattan!!! i even got a loan of 20 grand, i passed the high school equivalency exam [meaning i get my diploma] and im all set---and it's only DECEMBER. more than half of the seniors aren't even applying to colleges yet. The thought of being on my own it great, but nerve-racking. I'm going to be away from home...which is like 10 miles from NYC, but it isn't the same being with my family. Im nervous right now....please give me advice how I can work out to be on my own. I hate asking my dad for help--the old ignorant bastard. I want to do things on my own.

Oh dear I feel sad that you had to call your father that name. I mean I dont know the details but try to not do that. Ok so regarding your question, what you are going through is normal. Do your remember how you felt going in to high school? Im sure you were nervous about that change also. Any change is difficult but Congratulations! You are going to be very successful. New York is the best place in the world and you will be fine there since people ARE helpful there. Do whatever it takes to finish your FIT schooling. If you do have to ask your father, do so and be sure to give him a big hug if he helps you because it is not easy being a father and supporting people all the time. Best wishes and take 3 deep breaths whenever you feel nervous.

Try and do something with your friends before you go, so you're not dwelling on it all day. Then before you go in eat/drink something sugary. Also tell the person who's doing it that you're nervous and ask them to take their time and talk you through it.& If you can get your friends to come in with you and talk to you while you're getting it done. Don't worry about passing out, I passed out when I got the inner part of my ear pierced and it was because I was soo nervous! It wasn't embarassing at all, the woman just seemed concerned. Also try and get a good nights sleep the night before and make sure you eat something to get your energy levels up. Also try shaking your hands from your wrists, sounds weird, but it does have a calming effect!! Don't Worry&Good Luck!!

Hi.. congratulations !!! You've made it!

Hon, being nervous is normal, and you'll just have to slide into your independence and being away from family in your own way... i'm sure that there will be a lot of other kids who have left home for the first time, who are just as scared or nervous... and excited at the same time!

if you need your parents' help, take it, if they will give you some assistance.... that's what they are there for.

i hope it all works out!!
