The strings of the common six-string guitar are E A D G B E from the largest gauge to the smallest. The strings are not called cords or chords. Chords are formed by placing the fingertips on certain strings within certain frets to produce a harmonious sound to the ear.

Patch cords are used to connect the acoustic-electric or electric guitar to an amplifier.

I've made the same mistake. One of my spanish-speaking friends would sometimes talk about changing "cuerdas" (cords) on an instrument. It took me a while before I understood he meant the strings (since I speak pre-school level spanish...)

You can find a diagram of the strings here: http://myonlineguitar.com/wordpress/ The page also has a free podcast which you can listen to online that tells you the names of the strings, notes, etc.

From closest to you, they go EADGBE. This is also the order from thickest to thinnest.

By the way, in English they are called "strings," not "cords."

I hope that helps!
