There is no "crack down", but there does seem to be more people driving drunk during the holidays.

People take vacation around this time, and visit friends and relatives at a higher rate.

Of biggest concern, drinking at a private home can result in a higher alcohol level, because the drinks readily available, and there is less control over the amount of alcohol in mixed drinks.

Although any injury or fatality resulting in drunk driving is tragic, it is compounded further by the fact it happens near the holidays. Relatives will associate the loss of a loved one with the holidays, spoiling an otherwise happy occasion for years to come.

My last point also confirms the italian's answer above... the media tend to give a lot more attention to drunk driving around this time. This attention results in advertising campaigns, and media coverage on the news.

The police take action on drink driving throughout the year. However, there are certain times of the week/year that alcohol consumption does increase and people are more likely to drive under the influence. Friday and Saturday nights are one example and there are more arrests for alcohol related offences on these days.

Increased alcohol consumption is very much encouraged through advertising during the christmas period. It is seen as an integral part of christmas by many people - and christmas parties and work celebrations increase the amount of people in clubs and on the streets. It's inevitable that more people will be 'taking a chance' by drink driving and therefore a stronger crack down by the police is required in order to make the roads as safe as possible for other road users and pedestrians.

The biggest crack down for drunk driving occurs St. Patricks day. They get the most arrest! But major holidays like Christmas, New Years, Thanksgiving, 4TH of July the police are also cracking down on drunk drivers. They put it on the news a lot because they want people to think before they drink.

I think it is quite obvious that most people drink more and go to more functions / parties at Christmas. Therefore a campaign is run to discourage those people from drinking and getting behind the wheel.

Alcoholics count for only a tiny percentage of drink drivers arrested each year. Most people are those that want to risk having a drink and driving or are too foolish to realise that they will be over the limit.

We have spot checks all year 'round but there is more drinking and driving this time of year because of Christmas parties. Many of the drinking drivers I get aren't necessarily alcoholics, many are regular people that have made a bad choice.

They crack down more than normal around EVERY holiday. Christmas is not even the biggest for this. Many departments kick up enforcement a few times a year that are not related to times more people are drinking.

I don't know the official figures, but I'd say most people drink at least double the amount they usually drink, at this time of year, and there's certainly an increase in accidents related to drink driving around this time i would've thought. People get given alcohol as gifts, there's alcohol in a lot of christmas food - chocolate liqueurs, brandy on christmas pudding, snow balls, wine with dinner etc, and also we get invited to a lot of parties at this time of year, this is why the police are more vigilant

They don't only crack down on it at Christmas; it's just more publicised and on certain nights (New Years Eve, for instance) it makes sense to be more visibly checking as a deterrent, but also because logistically, around Christmas more people are likely to be attending parties.
