Cell walls offer support and some protection against physical damage.
Chloroplasts produce food molecules for energy storage.
A large central vacuole provides a place to store cellular wastes and also provides a place for water to be held for turgor pressure to help support the plant.

But whole plant structures:
To deter animal and human preditors
secretion of toxins/allergins (poison oak, poison ivy)
thorns (blackberry, rose, cactus)
