Assuming that you have a good working recipe, did you follow it exactly? Adding more fat or liquid can make your cookies spread more.

You can use butter or a good brand of shortening. Fluffy margarine or shortening will make you cookies spread more.
They just don't work well for cookie baking.

Get an oven thermometer (the kind that hangs on one of the racks) and measure your oven temperature. Then adjust your oven setting accordingly. Always pre-heat the oven.
I've owned gas and electric ovens. I've had good results with both.

Leave enough space between each cookie. If the receipe reads says to drop or space cookies at least 2 inches apart. Do it!

Cookies with baking soda tend to spread more than those with baking powder.

Dark pans heat up faster and hold the heat longer. Shinney pans are slower to heat. I like shinney pans.

Cookie dough should be cold when you put it on a cool pan.
Don't put the dough on a pan warm from the oven. This sometimes make cookies spread more.

Hope this helps. Since I don't know what recipe you are making I tried to throw out everything I could think of. I've made most of the above mistakes at one time or another.

I don't know much about ovens- I'm assuming "electric" is the typical ones most have. I know we don't have the restaurant ovens here. Anyway, if your cookies ran all over the pan when baking, try putting the dough in the fridge for about 30 mins to an hour. It'll firm the dough up and hopefully not run with the next batch.

When I do this, I roll the dough into balls and they come out round for the most part.

Try cooking them longer. If it was your first batch, the oven may not have been preheated enough when you started. You may not have let them cool soon enough before you tried to move them, which is why they ran.

You may just have a gooey recipe. The only way to know is try a few different things.
