Just bought a used Nissan Frontier, and it comes equipped with a push button to switch O/D on or off.

During normal running conditions, should the dashboard indicator that reads O/D off be lit or should it be turned off?

You should generally leave it alone, which would mean overdrive is enabled. The overdrive is basically a fourth gear that will lower the revs at speed to give you better mileage.

Here's when you might consider turning it off:

If you are driving in such conditions where the transmission is frequently switching between 3rd and 4th (OD) - this is annoying and tough on the transmission

If you're going down a long hill and you don't want to ride the brakes, you can turn it off to downshift to 3rd

If towing or carrying a heavy load

the rest of the time, just leave it enabled

Over Drive is higher gear ratio and saves engine wear and gasoline OD on (light off) is what you need above 45 mph. Nissan provides a switch to turn OD off so the transmission does not have to shift up and back so much like stop and go traffic back up on the freeway.

overdrive is an automatic gear in your transmission that automatically lowers your transmission speed thus lowering your engine rpm thus saving gas (in the short run) and engine maintenance (in the long run).

your overdrive should be on at all time (especially on the highway). the only reason you should turn it off is if your on winding roads that forces constant shifts to your transmission (such as a steep winding mountain) doing so would limit the continuous shifting.

so basically you don't want the dash light on unless your on steep terrain or such as i just mentioned

hoped this helped

the overdrive is a fourth gear that is mostly for speeds over 45mph but it is ok to leave the overdrive on. the only reason to turn it off is for towing or steep hills

It is your top gear. You want it on. If you are going through mountains turn it off.
