As with many others here, it's largely because I'm an ex-Christian
I have four bibles, the book of Mormon, a translation of the Qur'an and dozens of other reference works within arm's length.
I love this new snug computer room/study, and I haven't loaded all the shelves, yet.
And then there's the internet...
But you're right that many of the questions and points of view are terribly familiar, and don't need a reference resource at all. I'd match my bible knowledge against perhaps 95% of Christians I encounter. Often it's frightening how little they know.

I was raised Christian, and if I search hard enough I probably still have a bible packed away somewhere.
But you are talking to people that have INTERNET ACCESS, you do realize that there are literally thousands of websites that allow you to search the bible.
And, as a read, it is a pretty good, albeit slanted and dated, book.

This might come as a shock but many atheist were once religious, also if you are going to disagree with something you should probally be educated about what it is that you are disagreeing with. Some religious people will disagree with something without having any knowledge about it.I prefer to educate myself so that i can state why and point out the things that make me come to my conclusion.

This is something I've wondered about. I know more atheists who know ten times more than I do about the Bible. It also seems as though they bring God up more in conversations than I would ever do. It seems a lot like they are protesting way too much-that they really do believe in God-but dont want to admit it for some reason. I just say a prayer for them. They'll come around.

many atheists have studied the bible much more than most christians. most atheists and those who have left christianity have spent many hours, years studying scripture trying to get it to make sense.

I keep a bible handy...I like to debate with religious zealots, especially those of the catholic or JW persuasion.
For instance, I would mention to them that God screwed up when creating Adam & Eve. He was really ticked off at Eve for eating the apple. Adam decided to do as she did instead of taking a stand and saying no. So I would ask them why blame women? He had a mind of his own.
And if God was so ticked, well, why not snuff them out and create two beings who will listen to instructions?

I have a Bible. I also have a copy of the Quran.
However, in answering online questions, I used the Skeptics Annotated Bible. It has great crosslinks for many verses.

The same reason I keep the Aeneid, Lord of the Flies, the Time Machine, and the Gita handy. I like books.
