I have the exact same rifle. When I shoot a 400g maxie ball with 90 grains of FF powder, the kick is pretty substantial. I believe this is partially due to the butt plate as mentioned above, and the design of the stock does not fit me well. What I would suggest you do is try it once, and see how it feels to you, as everyone perceives recoil differently. If you find the recoil is too heavy, you can reduce the charge, or bullet weight, or both.

I am only familiar with a Thompson Center .50 Hawken. With 90 grains it is more than a "push" than a kick. I think I fired the maximun load which is 120 gr. I seem to recall that up to 90 grains wasn't bad, but you could definetely feel the 120 gr. I can shoot a .30-06 but I don't enjoy it. A .50 caliber blackpowder kicks less than a modern rifle. I have fired conical bullets about that size 425 gr in a .50 I think they were called Maxi Balls. It's not that bad, and I am recoil shy. But I have not fired a .54 caliber.

Yeah it kicks a bit with 425 grain bullets (just about an ounce)-about like a .30-06. The problem is that hooked metal buttplate-OUCH that thing hurts.

That's the smokepole I most often use, and it's a pussycat. For one, the barrel's heavy enough to take up a lot of what might be unpleasant recoil in a lightweight modern style rifle. For another, keeping things traditional, you won't be using a scope, so there's no temptation to take your cheek off the stock.
