I'm making brownies but we don't have vegetable oil. My parents are telling me that they think I use "extra-virgin olive oil" instead. Can I use the olive oil? If not, is there another substitute I can use?

Ok so no olive oil. We don't have any other sort of oil in the house, but I also heard somewhere that I could melt butter and use melted butter? Is that true?

Just thought I'd let you all know how this turned out: I used a brownie mix, three eggs, 1/4 cup water and 1/2 cup melted butter. The mixture seemed really think to me, however after cooking the brownies at 350 degrees for roughly 35 minutes, they came out amazing.

Olive Oil is fine--I use it for baking all the time (so I don't have to buy multiple oils). Melted butter would work, but, the texture could be slightly different. Either option may change the taste slightly, although, with chocolate brownies, you probably won't notice the difference.

Happy baking!

I forgot to mention the possibility of using applesauce or other fruit puree (some people used to use baby food) in place of oil--an old low-fat diet trick. Just substitute the applesauce or puree cup for cup for the oil. It won't be exactly the same, but, it will still be moist and taste good. You could even make the brownies with frozen raspberries pureed in the food processor (chocolate and raspberry are great together) although you may want to use something a bit thicker.

Olive oil isn't excellent for baking or cooking, until a whatever like a stir fry. The obstacle with cooking with olive oil is that it's particularly touchy to warmness. If you're tryng to uncover a healthful choice to consistent vegetable oil, check out canola.

I just made these last week and my husband loved them, mix 1 box of brownie mix and 1 can of 100% pure pumpkin. that is all. mix pour into pan and cook (time) following brownie directions but keep check on them last 5 minutes. will be very soft and very fudgy. I made a glaze and only put a couple of spoonsfull on them while hot to spread thin. Very low calorie, healthy, less fat and less cholesterol.

If you have canola oil instead I would use that, olive oil has a stronger taste that is more suited to using on raw savoury dishes and is also more expensive.

Applesauce. You don't taste it, I've done it before. It's better for you too.
