if you are trying to play a hd-dvd then no you can't play it

Yes, PS3 can play DVD's, but only from the region you purchased the PS3 from. It will also play DVD-R and DVD-RW
However, PS3 is region free for games and Blu-Rays.

i own a ps3 and yes it can play dvds.
thats the only thing i use to watch movies.
no more dvd player

Yes it can all you have to do is put the dvd in where you usually put the video game and turn it to the right componet or channel.
