(This answer assumes you are located in the US)

Do not assume that there is a date. If you get good UHF reception now, you can probably keep using the same antenna after all the old analog channels are shut down on 2/17/09.

The new digital broadcasts use the same frequencies that the old analog ones use. As far as antennas are concerned, there isn't any difference between them. Digital TV is somewhat more fussy about signal quality than the old analog system, so if you get poor reception (particularly on channels 14-69), you might need a better antenna for DTV.

On 2/17/2008 the government will start handing out discount coupons that will let you buy a digital TV converter for about $20. You can buy one, install it between your rabbit ears and TV, and have almost a year to play with it and figure out if you need a new antenna before the old analog broadcasts start.

Just remember, the idea that there are special "HD antennas" is just marketing hype....

February 17, 2009. That's when analog broadcasting stops. However you'll be able to buy a heavily gov't subsidized converter box to continue watching using your old tv.
