Some advice from a physician:
There's no real advantage to quitting the Chantix at this point. Chantix is not nicotine, and you are not weaning from nicotine. You've completed that already. Now, you're just letting your body's memory for nicotine die down so that when you don't have any help from the Chantix, your habit will be weak enough that your willpower by itself will be sufficient to keep you smoke-free.
This is the most important thing you'll do this year, and you don't want to jeopardize your chances. Your cravings were once too much for your will alone, or else you would have quit on your own just by willing it. Some day, maybe today, maybe not yet, your urges will be easily managed by your will. Maybe today, maybe not. Do you want to put it to the test for the price of a month's worth of Chantix, which is all that you stand to gain by not stopping it now? Or would you rather put it to the test next month? Remember that it took a few days in your system - about a week - before it started to work. It will continue to work for a few days after you quit it.
But if your urge comes back a little stronger than you can easily handle, and you want to go back on the Chantix, two things: (a) you don't have another starter pack so you'll either have to get one from your doctor, or start on full dose, and (b) you won't be covered for the first few days that you restart, just when you need it most. I vote to spend the $150 or whatever it costs - a lot, I know, especially at Christmas time, but well worth it to insure success. Consider it your gift to yourself and family.
Now, two more pitfalls that I don’t think that you’ll have trouble negotiating, but which are worth considering.
(1) Almost everybody gains weight at this point. Food starts to taste good again, and your hands are idle. Perhaps you won’t gain - some don't. But if you do, it’s not too high a price to pay to be a nonsmoker. You can lose the five to fifteen pounds as a nonsmoker in a few months when your urge to put things in your mouth has died down to normal. And
(2) Smoking does two things to your airways, one to make you cough more, the other less. It turns your airways red and irritated (tracheo-bronchitis) which makes you need to cough a lot. It also burns off the little sensory hairs in the airways, which tends to numb the effect of the inflammation. The first process takes six months to recover, but the hairs may be back already. That often makes one cough more than when smoking – at first. I have had too many patients restart smoking because they were coughing so much more than when they smoked. That combined with the weight gain makes them think that they were better off smoking. Wrong! Go ahead and cough as much as you want. It’s a sign of partial healing. When the airways have cooled off, you will stop coughing, your weight will be back off, and you can tell Phillip Morris (hiding under the name Atria these days) to bite thee!
Good luck.

I took chantix and it took about 2 weeks to start slowing down on my nicotine intake, but that is when the real problem started. I begin to have the most vivid nightmares about all kinds of terrible things I would have at least 10-15 nightmares in one night and wake up every 30 minutes it was horrible. I still smoke I am currently looking into a shot that you get. They shoot you in each arm and once in the back of the neck. I have had multiple friends that have had this done and they all quit and say they have not even had a slight urge to start smoking again. On the other hand if you like smoking that much and you don't feel like crap doing go ahead and smoke. Why let someone else tell you that you should stop doing it if you enjoy it smoke.... That's my opinion....

VARENICLINE (Chantix™) is a prescription medicine to help people quit smoking. It can reduce the symptoms caused by stopping smoking. It can also decrease the urge to smoke and decrease nicotine cravings. It is used with a patient support program recommended by your physician. Generic varenicline tablets are not available.
NOTE: You should use Chantix™ alone. Do not use with other smoking cessation products. Talk to your prescriber for advice before stopping Chantix™.
What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
• kidney disease
• an unusual reaction to Varenicline, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
• pregnant or trying to get pregnant
• breast-feeding
How should this medicine be used?
NOTE: You should set a date to stop smoking and tell your prescriber. This medicine is started one week before the quit date. Stick to your plan; ask your prescriber about support groups or other ways to help you remain a 'quitter'.
Take the tablets by mouth after eating. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the tablets whole with a full glass of water. It is important to take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Do not stop taking the tablets except on your prescriber's advice.-

I would not even question this one; especially if you have been smoking for an extended period of life. ie; 1 pack a day for at least a 10 year run for me and I took chantix and didn't stop until I was completely through every last one of those fart inducing, stomach quaking, blessed blue pills. After 10 years of crippling my will to quit killing myself I had gone through many a battle to no success. Nicotine Gum, Nicotine Patch, Will, Hypnosis, Marijuana.... Nothing; until I started taking chantix and to sum it all up.
Give your will power as long as possible to re-establish it's authority on your actions and your reality as a non-smoker.
Enjoy!
reference of marijuana consumption was an exagerration and doesn't reflect actions taken by user. ;)

The approved course of Chantix treatment is 12 weeks. Patients who successfully quit smoking during Chantix treatment may continue with an additional 12 weeks of Chantix treatment to further increase the likelihood of long-term smoking cessation.

My stepdad did that and he hasn't smoked since. The first pack was enough for him. Good luck.
