I am going to the domincan in a week. I am a white male, with dirty blond hair and fairly white skin. Should I tan at a tanning salon before i go to the island. I do usually burn, but thats only if i stay in the sun for a long time with no sunscreen. I dont have that much money to spare so I will only go if I must.... I dont want to ruin my trip. People with this experience help me out. Is it that much better to tan before?

Just apply plenty of sunsreen before and after swimming. Wear a hat and sunglasses when walking around. Cover up and try to sit in the shade when out the water. If you snorkel wear a t-shirt so your back doesn't burn.

Have a great trip. Enjoy)

living on ST Thomas 30 years, I've seen hundreds of people who underestimate the power of the sun here." I lay on the beach all summer in ( Cape Cod, Jersey Shore, Lake Michigan, etc ) and I never burn,"

Unprotected skin, especially fair white, will start to burn in as little as 15 minutes exposure down here, especially places like the top of the foot if you're wearing sandals/flip flops.

Pre tanning would be good. Heavy use of SPS 30 or better is a must. Be seriously paranoid about the sun the first three or four days.....no more than half hour at a time before you duck into shade......you'll notice that all the old time West India Hands are standing in the shade as much as possible!

Heavy fanatical use of SPS 30 or better is a must!

honey I live in Barbados and i worry about my skin. What i'm suggesting is seeing as you're paying you're good money to come down why waste more money in a tanning salon when that's what the sun is there for.all you have to do is make sure you apply a good w' a good spf...look what i found for you....

, the term suntan lotion usually means the opposite of sunscreen, and instead refers to lotion designed to moisturize and maximize UV exposure and tanning rather than block it. These are commonly called indoor tanning lotions when designed for use with tanning beds or just suntan lotion if designed for outdoor use and may or may not have SPF protection in them.

The most effective sunscreens protect against both UVB (ultraviolet radiation with wavelength between 290 and 320 nanometers), which can cause sunburn, and UVA (between 320 and 400 nanometers), which damages the skin with more long-term effects, such as premature skin aging. Most sunscreens work by containing either an organic chemical compound that absorbs ultraviolet light (such as oxybenzone) or an opaque material that reflects light (such as titanium dioxide, zinc oxide), or a combination of both. Typically, absorptive materials are referred to as chemical blocks, whereas opaque materials are mineral or physical blocks.

i hope this helps you to realise that "tannig" before you leave home will leave your skin more susceptible to damage and harmful uv rays
hope this helped
