Technologically, this is impossible!
However, the PS3 will upscale all DVD's to either 720p or 1080p output, depending on what your TV supports.

You like so many other people seem to be unaware of why Blu-ray was created. As many people have said Blu-ray has a much higher data storage capacity of at least 4x than that of a dvd. The purpose of this is because of high definition video. DVDs carry video footage in 480 resolution and Blu-ray carries 1080. The difference in size is like comparing a cat door to your front door.
Now the reason you can't "upgrade" your dvd video is a simple reason that developers have dealt with for years. Any digital copy of a video cannot get bigger no matter what. While the video can be stretched it will retain it's original quality and only look grainy and have poor quality (this is the effect seen when you watch DVDs on an HD television).
The bottom line is you can't "upgrade" your DVDs because you are missing 2/3 of the data needed for video to be HD. The purpose of Blu-ray is to have enough room to store all the HD data.

The nice advantage that the PS3 has over any Blu-Ray player (apart from the games), is that Sony makes firmware upgrades to enhance your Blu-Ray experience. Just two weeks ago, Sony added the Picture in Picture functionality and the Blu-Ray profile 1.0 and profile 2.0 - this is functionality which no other Blu-Ray player on today's market has - and current Blu-Ray players will never have as they do not have the option to upgrade firmware like the PS3 has. To sum up, if BluRay capabilities change Like they have done this past month), Sony can modify the PS3 to match that. You cannot do that with a Blu-Ray player

Upgrade?? You must be joking right??? I have a 60GB PS3 but upgrading is out of this world. No offence, but it would rock if we could upgrade our DVDs to Blu-Ray Disks. Then we would also be able to upgrade our ps2 games... Life would be soooo wonderful... But no you can't. Blu-Ray Disks are totally different from DVDs. First of all, they're 30 GB each and a DVD is at about 4.7 GB. Quite a big difference isn't it?? Secondly, the quality of each Blu-Ray Disk is 5x times better than a normal DVD. Thirdly, have you checked the prices??? If we could upgrade our DVDs then the companies were releasing new movies and games in vain. All in all, no, you can't sorry. My advice is to rent the movies you want to see, or save money to buy some. Bye!!!

I'm sorry, it's not possible to upgrade a standard DVD movie to a Blu-ray. It's not technologically possible. A DVD 9, which is the standard DVD format, holds up to 9 GB of memory and a single layer Blu Ray disc holds up to 25 GB of memory so the major movie studios take advantage of this extra capacity by using advanced video and audio codecs which offers us consumers a high definition movie experience that you can't get with the standard DVD. So what I'm basically saying is you can't improve the quality of a DVD by burning it on a blu ray disc.

You can't upgrade a regular DVD to a Blu-Ray DVD, You'll just have to buy the same movie in the Blu-Ray format if you want it that bad.
However, the PS3 can upscale regular DVD's to HD quality.
