We have a very obese cat that used to live mostly indoors, but then she got to where she wanted to be outside all the time. We adopted her when she was around 2 years old, and we were told that she was spayed when we adopted her. She for some reason started hating being indoors and started spending the majority of her time outside. She disappeared for a couple days, and returned this morning and it's the first time I've noticed how swollen her belly is. She's got very long hair, so I didn't see her belly until today. When I picked her up and carried her inside to show my wife, my wife put her hands on the cat's belly to feel how swollen it was, and the cat acted like it hurt her. Could it be that they lied and she's pregnant? Or could it be something more serious than that?

We've owned the cat a little over a year, and never experienced her showing signs of being in heat, although she went through a phase of pooping indoors.

I should mention that although she was obese when we got her, she slimmed down after we put her on a diet, and now she's swollen up again like she was when we first got her.

It could be constipated. Does its belly feel firm? My kitty was constipated and her belly was bloated and hard. I took her to the vets and luckily they got her to pass it without surgery. Just a thought!!

Is it bothering her? Is it very red in that area? Does it feel warmer near the ball than the other area? Could be that there is a slight infection under the stitches. Is it oozing at all in that area or did they close up the skin with skin glue? The area should be draining. She could also have a small hernia after the surgery in that area. If it looks OK - not infected - it is probably a hernia and should be fine until you get back to the vet. If you want to be on the safe side and you happen to have some amoxicillin or penicillin around the house, you can give her about 50 mg twice a day until you get back. Make sure it isnt a cillin blend with another drug - just plain amoxy or penicillin. Ampicillin is OK too. Just mix some in with some wet food. If you add more info I might be able to give you better info.

I cant claim to know exactly what is wrong with your girl, but there are a few possibilities-- parasites ( worms) can cause a belly to swell. More seriously, a tumor , or internal bleeding. Please understand I am not a vet- although I have had cats for the past 20 years, and volunteered extensivley at no kill shelters. I would try the cornell education site- they are are experts with cats! best of luck and my thoughts are with you.

Have you taken your cat to the vet, since you got her....over a year ago? The vet will be able to tell if she's been spayed or is now pregnant! Never take someone else's word, when it comes to spaying/neutering. Sometimes people will tell you that it's been done, so they can get you to take the cat! Take her to the vet ASAP, and let him/her tell you why the cat's belly is swollen! Good luck................

She could be pregnant if your vet did not confirm the spay scar. Or it could be worms, constipation, or a number of other causes. Regardless, there is something different and wrong with your cat. A visit to the vet is needed. I have learned that with animals (and people) that it is always cheaper to go in sooner rather than later.

Swollen belly may also be the sign for worms, but other things also like fluid build-up caused by numerous reasons. So I would strongly suggest a check-up by a vet.

she could be pregnant, check her nipples to see if they are swollen also, because you said she went away for a few days this is very common for cats to do while in the mating season. I would ring the vet to make sure though. They'll let you know whether to bring her in or not

If your cat is in pain you should take it in to the vet. My fat cat recently had some swelling on her belly, it turned out to be a cancerous tumor. I had it removed and she is fine now and I don't mean to scare you, you but you should have it checked out.

I think that your best bet would be to have your cat see her vet and let him/her advise you. Good Luck.
