I am talking about Holmes from 78'-84'. I feel he would rip through the division now more so than he did back then. The fighters now are no comparison 2 the ones Holmes fought in his prime. Opinions please.

Aceman, Larry Holmes would have dominated the heavyweight boxing scene today. He had those great boxing skills, a rapier like jab and could punch too a complete fighter. He fought guys like Norton, Shavers, Cooney, Berbick, Carl Williams, Weaver, Snipes, and Bonecrusher Smith all of whom would have probably beaten the heavyweights of today in my opinion. I agree that the guys he fought were much better than the ones fighting today and yeah, he'd rip through the divbision easily in my opinion.

This is how he fare against today top heavyweights.
1. He would stop Klitscho in the 13th round just like he did Gerry Cooney. Larry is not a big puncher so it take time for him to chop a big guy down.
2. Oleg Maskaev is slow and strong so it will be like the Randall Texx Cobb fight, Larry by an easy unanimous decision.
3. Sultan will be like David Bey, Larry stopped him in the later round.
4. Ruslan is like Renaldo Snipes, again Holmes stopped him in later round.
5. Samuel Peter will give Holmes a hard fight in the beginning like Earnie Shavers did but eventually Holmes will tire Samuel out and win.

Larry Holmes was one of the greatest champions heavyweight division has ever had and pound for pound one of the best boxers this sport has ever produced. If he were at his best today he would be dominant just like he was back then when he was at his actual prime. In fact, at this time I see only four fighters who would be worthy of challenging Larry and that would have the potential to give him a real test. Wladimir Klitschko and Ruslan Chagaev first come to mind and I also see Sultan Ibragimov and Alexander Povetkin as very interesting opponents for him. Other then them I don't thing that anyone else is really worth mentioning here.

Addition
There is one more thing that I have to comment here: "...then theres "Ibrigamov", If you ask me Hollifield beat him last month, but because the fight was in Russia, they gave it to him. the guys a Bum..."
First of all KatVic it's Holyfield and Ibragimov. The least you could do if you are referring to these men is have enough class to learn to spell their names correctly.
And most importantly, this is one of the most blatant, insulting and malicious lies I've ever read since logging on to this forum. Sultan Ibragimov was absolutely in complete control of that match from the opening to the final bell. He outboxed Evander in every single round and gave him a lesson, without even getting hit with a clean shot in the entire match. What you could do here is congratulate Evander on the ability to engage in such high paced and entertaining contest at his age against a top level opponent, but the fact is 118 - 110 for Ibragimov was the correct and fair scoreline of that fight.
I just want to say that posting arrogant and derogatory trash like this doesn't make you a boxing fan and it certainly doesn't make you more of a patriot. It just shows you for a boxing ignorant liar and a spiteful, disrespectful person that you really are.

The undisputed, undefeated Heavyweight Champion of the world....LARRY HOLMES!

Over time, one can lose track of how good or how bad fighters were compared to today's crop. When reviewing a few of Larry's fights, one thing really sticks out in my mind: Holmes was a lot faster than today's heavy. Holmes was fast for his era, and he'd be superfast for this era. I just don't see these big guys of today being able to get away from his punches. They'd have to keep a high guard to defend rather than look for openings. And Holmes was good at punching through or around a high guard.

hi Stone. Now make no mistake approximately it, Holmes has arguably the final jab of all time and Louis had probably the main punishing jab different than possibly Liston in heritage. Holmes had some annoying moments in the time of his call reign yet nonetheless controlled a thank you to win. yet he on no account fought all people that had something close to the skill point or ability of Louis who became into particularly 2 fisted. Louis became into additionally an outstanding boxer and an authority at installation his punches. this is how I see this combat going sir: The combat Early on Holmes would attempt to dominate the action together with his impressive jab yet Louis would slip and counter a number of them sending Holmes into the ropes. Holmes would combat back fiercely or perhaps stun Joe a ffew circumstances with annoying and proper palms. Louis would start to artwork the physique of Holmes forcing him to hold on by making use of the middle of the combat. Holmes would proceed his super boxing yet Louis would expertly decrease off the hoop and land some bombs just about sending Holmes down in around 9. finally in around 13 Louis would land a wonderfully timed correct hand sending Holmes down for an 8 count variety. Holmes became into super at surviving and would proceed to exist this yet this knockdown may be the version in an in depth combat. Louis by making use of chop up deicion win.

Larry was never a paper champion he beat everyone the heavyweight division had to offer at that time it isn't his fault that he was so much better than everyone eles. he would kill the heavyweights of today and he would have did good with the champions of the past. Lets not forget Holmes beat Ali (past his prime) Ken Norton,Leon Spinks,Ray Mercer,Gerry Cooney,Earnie Shavers,. You have to give credit when its due and Larry needs his He is one of the greatest champions of all time bar none

In my absolute-honest opinion, I think if Larry Holmes would come out of retirement "Today", even at his age, he would beat more than half of the heavy weights out there today. I mean, the division is full of "Bums", lets face it! There are a few okay ones who would probably beat him because of his age, But if Holmes were in his prime today, I would bet a million dollars against a penny, he would knock-out-every-single-heavy-weight out there today. No-doubt in my mind. I mean lok who's out there, "Kletchko"(has a glass-jaw), "Samuel Peters" ( swings like he's insane and hopes one lands.) Not only that, but after 5 rounds he's completely spent. Then theres "Ibrigamov", If you ask me Hollifield beat him last month, but because the fight was in Russia, they gave it to him. the guys a Bum! Michael Moorer? old-Man-Bum. Hollifield is also past his time, theres just nobody out there right now you know? Then you have "James Toney", Fat-Old-Bum. "Lamon Brewster", a sneeze would knock him down. "Chris Byrd" King-Of-The-Bums! And last but not least, "John Ruiz", My-God I think my wife could kick his a,s,s,! Yeah, we nowdays are blessed with a division full of old-men, and glass-jawed-BUMS, plain and simple. Thats my take on it anyways. And I dont see anyone comming up on the horizon either, so we are looking at at least another 5 to 10 years until it gets good again,if it ever does that is. Anyways, Take Care, and God-Bless to You and Yours, 1st. Sgt., 7th Special Forces, (Ret.) Vietnam 67-70

I agree he would. Because now like when he was champ there is no big talents in the heavies..Would he have gone 48-0 like before who knows but he would be a paper champ until the next big thing comes along just like before. in all fairness he was a good boxer. could he have been a great only if he had a personality transplant.

DOMINATION +++

Had the reach, the jab alone and an overhand right needed for taller opponents And the uppercut for the smaller heavies. Experience and the will to continue, when and IF he got into any semblance of trouble.

well, the heavyweight division 2day isn't so good. but just with his jab alone, Holmes would clean house against 2day's heavyweights.
