If I add Microsoft Office, will that cancel out the windows media center or will they both work still?

Media Center XP is fine. Get the Microsoft Office Students and Teachers addition. Big savings over regular office, also, if your running XP you could get the 2003 version of MS Office cheaper than the current 2007 version. No big advantage to using 2007, unless your class requires that version.

As someone has said, Media Center is just Windows XP with some extra stuff. So no need to change it. Also, you will probably find that you are allowed to submit work that's saved in RTF format rather than Word's .DOC format, and free programs such as OpenOffice will do this. So you may not have to buy Word either.

No, Media Center is an enhanced version of XP and does not need any special add on's.
